S.P.H.E
What is SPHE?
S.P.H.E stands for Social, Personal and Health Education. It
provides particular opportunities to
foster the personal development, health
and well-being of the child and to help
him/her to create and maintain
supportive relationships and become an
active and responsible citizen in society.
The S.P.H.E primary school curriculum encompasses a holistic approach to nurturing the children through their development socially, emotionally, physically and mentally. There are three strands in the S.P.H.E curriculum - Myself, Myself and Others and Myself and the wider world.
At Carrowholly, we strive to create a wholesome S.P.H.E programme for our pupils. We use the following programmes.
RSE (Relationships and Sexuality Education)
Relationships & Sexuality education (RSE) is a key component of the Social Personal & Health Education (S.P.H.E.) curriculum in primary school. RSE provides children with opportunities to develop knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practical skills necessary to establish and sustain healthy personal relationships with self and others. In addition to learning about relationships, RSE invites children to explore concepts such as physical development
and human sexuality.
Stay Safe
The Stay Safe programme itself is a personal safety skills programme designed for use with primary school children from Junior Infants through to 6th class. The programme seeks to enhance children’s self-protective skills by participation in lessons on safe and unsafe situations, bullying, inappropriate touch, secrets, telling and stranger danger.
Busy Bodies
Busy Bodies is a useful resource to help support both teachers and parents in providing information on puberty to children aged approximately between 8 and 12. See booklet attached below.
Weaving Wellbeing
Weaving Well-Being is the first Irish-designed positive mental health programme of its kind which aims to enhance well-being in children aged from 7.5 to -12.5 years within the framework of the SPHE curriculum.
It is underpinned by the concept that a state of well-being is not simply the absence of the negative, but the presence of the positive. The Weaving Well-Being programme gives children the opportunity to weave positivity into their daily lives through a range of activities in a variety of areas resilience skills (including mindfulness) and developing self-efficacy through empowering beliefs. The lessons are designed to be implemented within the framework of the SPHE curriculum.
