Today, we were excited to welcome back our former student and boxing champion, Shannon Sweeney. Shannon was crowned European Light Flyweight Champion on 27th April in Serbia. She defeated Bulgarian boxer, Zlatislava Gena Chukanova after a 4-1 victory.
There was a significant homecoming celebration for Shannon in Westport in the days that followed this victorious milestone!
Shannon brought her gold medal to show to our students who were incredibly inspired by her boxing journey which started when she was in primary school and her innumerable achievements that followed. Shannon was kind enough to sign autographs for all of our students and gave all of our students the opportunity to hold her victorious medal. She gave very generously of her time to answer all of our bubbling questions and we are very proud of her and her link to this school.
Shannon spoke about building friendships through sport, staying motivated and about her determination to persevere. Often, we learn more from our losses than we do from our wins.
The children presented Shannon with cards, artwork, and flowers. Some of our 5th class students made a wonderful gold banner for the wonderful gold medalist!
