🧬🔬🧪🌡️⚛️ Scientists in the Junior Room ⚛️🌡️🧪🔬🧬
For Science Week 2023, the Junior Room were very busy with experiments.
They needed their white lab coat and glasses, a scientist's essentials. We are exploring weather in our Aistear for the month of November, and decided to explore some weather themed demonstrations.
Here are all the exciting experiments that they worked on:
(1) Rain cloud:
The children demonstrated how rain falls when clouds get heavy with droplets. We used a jar, water, shaving foam, food colouring and pipettes.
(2) Rainbow Walk:
It was really exciting to watch how the colour travelled over into the empty cups. We learned that there are 3 primary colours, and when we mix some of these colours together, we make secondary colours. The three colours that we started with were red, blue and yellow. Can you figure out what colours we made?
We used 6 cups, water, food colouring and kitchen paper.
(3) Tornado in a jar:
We made a swirling glitter tornado in a jar! It was very exciting. We chose silver glitter, as we decided that was a good tornado colour.
For this experiment, we used a jar, water, dish soap and glitter. We also used our excellent swirling skills!
(4) Balloon Rocket Race:
This was so much fun! First, we discussed how the air coming out really fast pushed the balloon the opposite direction. We set up the string and tried a number of ways to get the balloons to race. We discovered that it was necessary to sellotape the balloon onto a straw to ensure the balloon flew down the string to the finish line!
We used string, straws, sellotape and balloons.
(5) Lava Lamps:
Finally, we made a lava lamp. This was really cool, especially when we shone a light through it. We all had a turn adding the Alka Seltzer to cause the reaction that makes the lava move up and down.
We used a vase, water, oil, food colouring and Alka Seltzer. We also wore our lab coat and glasses (Just in Case!)
Science Week is lots of fun. We wrote about our experiments. We made some winter mittens, which we coloured by causing a reaction with tissue paper and water to cause the dye to run. They turned out really colourful.
